Making sense

Throught different type of sensors this box can mesure and tells you: the quality of the air, the amount of noise, the temperature and humidity.

Detailed description

This is an european open source project based on recieving information of the atmosphere through sensors. It can tells you: the amount of noise around the kit, the quality of the air, the temperature and the humidity.
You can check the data on-line “” and see the current data of your box or even an overwiew of previous days. But also you have the possibility to check other boxes information around the world.

This is the case called “Smart citizen kit” that contains all the sensors and has been designed by FabLab Barcelona open source projects and we have 3D printed with an Ultimaker Original. We have used PLA material and under you can see the parameters we have introduced to print the box.

Once you are inside search for “smart citizen kit” and it will appear the next page which has to look like the one below.

You should click in the link that says “fablabbcn/Smart-Citizen-Kit”. Next go to the folder that says “enlosure”.

After that go inside the folder “case”.

And after that and finally go to the one that says “SCK-1.1_case”. This is the file that you have to download.

Once you have download it and save it in your computer we have download “Cura” program. This is the program we have used before printing it in order to define all the parameters and quality of our future impression. Here the link:

Once you have downloaded and open it you have to “Import” the file of the box which was “SCK-1.1_case”. And once you imported we have defined our impression parameters that are the once below:

This is our final printed resoult. It took us around 6 hours and 30 minuts. Just try to be patient with the impression and don’t let never the machine alone.

For this project we also used a second sensor kit, called Bora Lora. The case for the Bora Lora is a transparent acrylic box where all the part are organized and visible .

On this page, under the section “Project versions”, you can download the files of the acrylic box. We have used the laser cutter to make it. We have used a 3mm thikness transparent acrylic and the set up of the laser was the following:

Finally we have designed a shelf solution to place both sensor boxes and to explain what is the project about and which are the steps you have to follow to visualise on-line the data. We have placed it in three different schools of Amsterdam.

So with this box we wanted to catch children and parents curiosity in order to invite them to test and play with it.

We have used a 4mm plywood and we have cut it with the big laser cutter. Under the “Project versions” section you can download the files:

This wooden package has been designed with the intention of not using glue and just by way the unions are you will not need any kind of glue. We have saved our illustrator files as a dxf. format because is the format that the laser can read.

Finally we have add some explanation about the sensors and we have used ingraved the inofrmation in the same 4mm plywood as the wood box. You can download the text file from the “Project versions”. The parameters we have used in the laser cutter are the followings:

After that and to sum up we have designed some colorful stickers to paste on some parts of the wood as the titles and the outlines of the text. If you desire you can find the file in “Project versions” and cut them with the vinil cutter. We have used the following parameters:
